How the Brain Responds to Sugar and Sex

Our brain has two goals: survival and procreation. Food compulsions are related to our personal survival. Procreation is related to the continuation of our species. Food is tasty. When food touches your tongue, you taste the flavor immediately. Imagine eating your favorite food; mine is a piece of chocolate cake. The experience is wonderful. It’s warm, sweet, and just the right texture. And by evolutionary design, the experience is brief. The sensory experience is so wonderful and ephemeral that I immediately crave another piece. I’m motivated to have another bite, and another, no matter how unhealthy the food choice might be. That’s food compulsion.
