Superconstruction: How Your Brain Imagines the Future

Think about what you do when you remember. You are rebuilding the past from pieces. Now, think about what you do when you imagine. I picture my house with the trees in the front lawn cut down, gone, the yard bare. I am taking my house, the one in my head, and I am adding something to it, changing it. And that is the same machinery. The hippocampus lets me both remember and imagine by taking pieces and recombining them.
