🎭 The Nine Masks of Control

Persona Tactics Impact on Survivor Goal of Abuser

  1. The Head Worker (Mind-Gamer) Gaslighting, moving objects, denying conversations, springing demands last-minute. Confusion, self-doubt, erosion of identity, exhaustion. Destabilize reality and make survivor dependent on their version of truth.
  2. 2. The Bad Father (Underminer) Criticizes parenting, humiliates mother in front of children, refuses childcare, avoids financial responsibility. Loss of authority, humiliation, children internalize disrespect, increased burden. Strip dignity, undermine parental role, avoid accountability.
  3. 3. The Sexual Controller (Possessor) Demands sex, refuses intimacy, invents stories about friends, cheats, verbal degradation. Isolation from friends, loss of trust, diminished self-worth, coerced intimacy. Dominate intimacy, fracture support networks, trap survivor in shame.
  4. 4. The King of the Castle (Domestic Tyrant) Claims “throne” in house, controls remote, demands dinner, expects calm children, household revolves around him. Invisible labour, loss of autonomy, family forced to appease his moods. Establish household as his kingdom, enforcing entitlement and dominance.
  5. 5. The Financial Controller (Economic Abuser) Restricts money, gives allowance, hides bills, manipulates debt, controls assets, sabotages belongings. Loss of independence, financial entrapment, liability for debt, infantilization. Strip financial freedom, cement dependence, control movement/choices.
  6. 6. The Bully (Silent Intimidator) Glares, clenched fists, puffed chest, threatening looks in public masked by charm. Hyper-vigilance, dread, inability to enjoy time out, fear of consequences later. Control through fear, intimidate silently, maintain plausible deniability.
  7. 7. The Prison Guard (Surveillant Isolator) Constant surveillance, workplace checks, mileage/receipt monitoring, isolation tactics, restricted mobility. Social withdrawal, normalized captivity, loss of independence, financial deprivation. Imprison through invisible walls of surveillance and restriction.
  8. 8. The Emotional Controller (Manipulator of Hope) False apologies, romanticized manipulation, excuses, minimization, future faking. Emotional tethering, cycles of hope and guilt, self-blame. Keep survivor hooked by promises of change that never come.
  9. 9. The Liar (Denier & Projector) Denies harm, deflects blame, projects actions onto victim, relentless accusations, scapegoats children. Confusion, erosion of trust in perception, forced false admissions. Escape accountability, rewrite reality, trap survivor in self-doubt.

This table shows how abuse wears nine masks – mental, parental, sexual, domestic, financial, physical, isolating, emotional, and deceptive. Each mask has unique tactics, but the underlying goal is always control, humiliation, and isolation. Naming these personas equips survivors and learners to recognize patterns early and resist normalization.
