Joanne Rowling seems to be on a personal quest to speedrun “How To Set Your Legacy On Fire” in Any%, and honestly? As someone who has also made questionable choices online, I have to respect the commitment. The rest of us post one bad take and disappear for six months. She posts one bad take, then builds an entire extended universe around it.

For years now, people who once worked on her projects — and plenty of former fans — have been openly backing away as her public commentary on trans issues has become the main event. The whole thing really kicked into a new gear in June 2020 with the now-infamous “people who menstruate” tweet, followed by her long essay laying out her views on “sex and gender issues.”

And the response from her former stars was basically: “Hey, maybe don’t do that?” Daniel Radcliffe posted a statement via The Trevor Project affirming that trans women are women. Emma Watson, meanwhile, tweeted (very plainly!) that trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live without being constantly questioned.
