Power to the People: A Poem
Create parallel paths—networks of care

We are not helpless—
we have just been taught
to forget our sovereignty.
Power was never meant
to sit on a throne,
pout behind a podium,
or demand obedience
behind borrowed symbols of strength.
Power lives within the people.
It lives where neighbors
know each other’s names.
Where meals are shared.
Where rides are given.
Where someone stays
when the system disappears.
We do not wait for saviors.
We organize.
We check on each other.
We build safety that does not ask
permission from men
who mistake cruelty for command
and avarice for authority.
We create parallel paths—
networks of care,
circles of protection,
knowledge passed hand to hand
so no one stands alone
when institutions fail.
Community is a practice.
It is showing up again
after disappointment,
when afraid,
even when told
nothing can be done.
Things are always done
by the people.
They always have been.
We link arms with one another.
We watch out for each other.
We refuse to quiet our voices.
We’re building something
stronger—together.
A living network
that cannot be dictated
or dismantled.
