The idea that comets seeded early Earth with the raw ingredients for life is one of science's more romantic origin stories. A new study suggests that, at least for one key molecule, the odds were poor. In 100,000 computer simulations of early comet bombardment, more than half of the scenarios delivered no meaningful amount of hydrogen cyanide to Earth's land surface at all, according to research published in Scientific Reports.
