When an athlete begins to structure with their on-court or on-field performance, the common instinct is to contact a mindset coach or mental skills trainer. However, what many athletes, families, and even front offices don't realize is that some of what looks like a "focus problem" or "confidence issue" is really a treatable clinical condition. Oftentimes, it required a board-certified sports psychiatrist to assess and treat the athlete. Sports psychiatry is often confused with sport psychology. While the two are complementary, they are not interchangeable, and understanding the difference can determine whether an athlete gets the right level of care.
