UCL Biologist Reports Unusually Few and Small Wasps in Britain, With No Survey Data Yet

A wasp researcher at University College London says social wasps have been conspicuously absent across Britain this summer, and that the ones she has found are unusually small. Seirian Sumner, a professor of behavioural ecology who studies these insects, set out the observation in a commentary asking where all the wasps have gone this summer, published by The Conversation and carried by ScienceDaily on Sept. 11. Her students cannot find enough wasps to run experiments, and professional pest controllers tell her it is a quiet year with very few requests to remove nests.
