Dr van Niekerk’s surprise for Junaid left us with the biggest smiles and a reminder that a touch of thoughtfulness can bring so much light!

Kuilsrivier, South Africa (16 February 2026) – Junaid Letoli is a pupil at Alta du Toit School in the Western Cape. The school has supported learners with special educational needs and disabilities for more than 60 years.

Junaid is wheelchair-bound and receives meaningful support at school. From his fellow students and teachers, and from Dr van Niekerk, a neurologist who regularly visits the school for neuro clinics.

This week, Dr van Niekerk visited the school, wielding a gift bag for Junaid.

“Since the very first day Dr van Niekerk met Junaid Letoli, he has always known exactly who he wants to be one day — a policeman. Year after year, that dream never changed,” shares the school. “Dr van Niekerk, who visits our school as a neurologist for our neuro clinics, carried that dream quietly in her heart. And this week, she chose to turn it into something unforgettable.”

“Junaid was surprised with all the gear a real policeman needs — and the moment he received it was nothing short of magical. There were tears, there were smiles, and there was pure, unfiltered joy shining on his face. A moment none of us will ever forget.” the school adds.

The pure joy a simple cap and siren brought to Junaid is proof that compassionate listening, thoughtfulness and kindness are all superpowers that, when practised, make the biggest impact.

It’s the wholesome reminder we needed, that every smile you spark can lift the world up a little more.

“Dr van Niekerk, thank you for your beautiful heart, your generosity, and for allowing us to share this special moment — even though you never sought recognition. Your quiet kindness has made a very loud difference.”
