Love Finds a Way – Doggie Arrives at Mdzananda on Mom’s Back

When love walks in, no matter how!
Khayelitsha, South Africa (17 February 2026) – There’s a pattern we’ve started to recognise at animal welfare clinics in South Africa…
In places where transport isn’t a given and money is tight, pets don’t always arrive at facilities in standard carriers. They come hauled up in shopping trolleys or wheelbarrows. Tucked into washing baskets. Made cosy in repurposed crates or tool boxes. In whatever safe solution their humans could figure out that day.
They always make it there, though. Because they are loved.
This week, a small puppy arrived at Mdzananda Animal Clinic and he wasn’t in a carrier at all. He was wrapped up and carried on his owner’s back, the way you’d carry a child. He lay there calmly, completely at ease, as if he knew he was safe.
“Today, a sweet little pup arrived wrapped snugly in a blanket, carried safely on his mama’s back like a baby. He was calm, content and completely trusting – travelling the only way his owner could manage. This is what love looks like.” shares the clinic.
We’ve seen it many times. When resources are limited, love finds ways to make it from a to b. Getting to a clinic for a vaccination or check-up can mean time off work, an extra long walk, or carrying extra weight for kilometres.
The length a person would go through for their fur-babies says everything.
That is responsible pet ownership – not being able to offer the world to your pet, but in loving them enough to provide for their needs, no matter what it takes. Even if that means lugging your puppy on your back across town for a clinic visit.
“In Khayelitsha, people may not always have access to transport, leashes or collars. But they have heart. They make a plan. They show up. They carry their animals when they have to. And they do it all so their pets can be healthy and safe,” shares the clinic, adding: “To this incredible community – we see you. We are inspired by you. And we are honoured to serve you.”
