South African coach Rulani Mokwena has left MC Alger of Algeria. The club confirmed his exit after he activated a clause in his contract.

Under that clause, Mokwena had to pay the club two months’ salary to leave.

Alger sit top of the Algerian Ligue 1. Mokwena spent eight months in charge and led the club to the Super Cup title.

Mokwena is now expected to join Libyan club Al-Ittihad. He will link up with former Orlando Pirates striker Thembinkosi Lorch, who joined Ittihad from Wydad Athletic of Morocco in January in a deal worth more than R1-million a month.

Mokwena joined Alger from Wydad Athletic, where he had also coached Lorch. Before Wydad, he served as head coach at both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Alger issued a statement wishing Mokwena well after his departure.

“The management of MC Algeria would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to coach Rulani Mokwena and his technical staff for the work and efforts they have put forward,” the club said.
