When the Rescuer Needed Rescuing: Heroes Step Up During Cheryl’s ‘Morning From Hell’

Cheryl Lyn is used to being the one answering the call for help, but at the start of this week, she found herself on the other side of a rescue.
Cape Town, South Africa (11 February 2026) – We’ve all experienced one of those mornings where nothing goes right – where from the moment you wake up, you can sense the impending doom of things breaking, failing, or strangely vanishing from their usual spots.
Cheryl Lyn, Founder of Cheryl Lyn’s Rescue Organisation, experienced what she called her ‘morning from hell’ earlier this week. While heading out from her farm to rush to an animal in need, she struck a pothole on a gravel road.
“Gosh, I didn’t see that pothole, and it was quite a deep one too. It caused so much damage. I broke my radiator, and my car started overheating. I landed up on the R27 and started Googling what to do,” Cheryl tells us.
When the search engine results added to her stress rather than resolving it, Cheryl called for help.
“Eventually, I called Toni Buys from SAPS, and she immediately came to help me. It was so fantastic the way she was so helpful.”
Friend and security officer, Adrian Kohn, also wasted no time coming to her aid, followed by Warrant Officer Davies, who joined the effort to help Cheryl with her car trouble.
“They always help me when I need assistance with animal-related emergencies, and this time they gladly came through for me when I was stuck on the road. While others drove past me, they stopped. Everyone was so amazing,” says a grateful Cheryl.
Though the timing of the vehicle breakdown has been most inconvenient, with 160 dogs currently in her care and the never-ending fieldwork of attending to cruelty cases remaining, Cheryl is grateful it’s only a temporary setback, which may even force her to slow down a bit.
Cheryl has loved animals since she was a little girl and always dreamed of running her own shelter. Through the years, she has been rescuing animals from the most horrific conditions day and night, seven days a week, rehabilitating and re-homing – and all of this with her personal funds and donations from the public.
To this end, even her own private space is completely filled with severe cases of abuse and neglect.
This hero’s hands are always full, and she is grateful that when her own wheels gave out, a few heroes emerged to look out for her, too!
