It is understandable how, at times of great distress and concern about the state of political affairs, people would turn to the system in order to try and protect themselves. After all, when people are under threat of losing civil rights or are being harmed by some group in society, we would hope that a system which is ostensibly supposed to defend people from harm and oppression would step in to help them.
