After a season filled with near-misses, South Africa finally edged the series leaders 21–19 in a thrilling Perth final to lift the trophy Down Under.
Perth, Australia (09 February 2026) – What a weekend it was for South African rugby fans.
From the first whistle to the final celebration, it was non-stop, high-speed Blitzboks rugby. You know, the kind that keeps you glued to the screen and reminds you why Sevens is pure entertainment.
After spending most of the season chasing Fiji, the Springbok Sevens finally flipped the script in Perth, edging their old rivals 21–19 to lift the title and in the process claim their seventh crown at the tournament.
It marked only South Africa’s second victory over Fiji in the current HSBC World SVNS campaign, the first coming in dramatic extra time on home soil in Cape Town. Having already lost to Fiji in the pool stages on Saturday.
At the heart of it all was Ryan Oosthuizen, who turned in a monster performance when it mattered most, scoring twice and dragging the Blitzboks over the line with powerful tries that felt part power, part defiance.
South Africa’s opening try came courtesy of a sharp turnover, with Dawid Brits intercepting a loose pass and shifting the ball to Sebastian Jobb, who sent Oosthuizen over in the corner. Moments later, another Fiji mistake allowed Duartee to change direction and release Jobb down the touchline, extending the Blitzboks’ lead to 14–0.
Fiji threw everything at South Africa, as they always do, but the Blitzboks stayed sharp, and showed serious steel on defence when the pressure peaked.
Around him, the team fed off the energy from the likes of Sebastian Jobb’s pace, Dawid Brits’ awareness, and Ricardo Duartee’s cool head. They all played their part in keeping the scoreboard ticking over.
With the win also pushing South Africa up the standings and firmly back in the title conversation, this felt less like revenge and more like a statement.
