South African content creator Dominic Zaca has opened up about the deeply personal story behind the outfit worn to the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July after receiving backlash from social media users who felt the look did not fit this year’s Country Allure theme.
While many fashion critics and social media users questioned Dominic’s interpretation of the dress code, Dominic later revealed that the outfit was never intended to compete for the best interpretation of the theme.
Instead, it represented healing, survival and reclaiming a painful chapter that began at the previous year’s event.
In an emotional TikTok video, Dominic explained that the inspiration behind the dress stemmed from an alleged traumatic experience at the 2025 Durban July involving a former partner.
“Last year I went to the Durban July, and I was dressed by Indoni Fashion House… they had put pearls on both sides of my chest,” Dominic recalled.
Dominic went on to allege that while wearing the dress, Dominic experienced what was described as the first time enduring abuse in a relationship.
“I will never forget hearing the sound as he was abusing me, the sound of my pearls from the dress falling onto the ground… making the tuk tuk tuk sound as they rolled across the hotel room floor.”
According to Dominic, after the alleged incident, the former partner left in Dominic’s Uber to continue enjoying the festivities, while Dominic remained behind trying to recover physically and emotionally.
Returning to the Durban July this year became far more than another glamorous appearance. Dominic explained that being invited by Chinese vehicle brand Omoda presented an unexpected opportunity to heal from that painful experience.
“When Omoda said to Dominic, ‘Let’s go to the Durban July,’ I said, ‘Omoda, you don’t know what you are healing.’”
Although Dominic acknowledged understanding and appreciating this year’s theme, Dominic stressed that the outfit was never designed to compete with other attendees.
Instead, every detail carried symbolic meaning.
“I wanted to wear my pearls again because this time, that man was not there to remove them from me. He was not there to take them from me; he was not there to break them.”
The striking outfit featured pearls draped across the body, while tassels at the hem were intentionally designed to resemble those found on cowboy leather jackets. According to Dominic, every design element symbolised reclaiming power and restoring what had once been taken away.
“The dress I was wearing yesterday was me healing because the last time I was here, someone took my pearls away from me.”
For Dominic, the most meaningful moment came at the end of the evening. Returning to the hotel with every pearl still attached carried far greater significance than any negative comments about the outfit.
“It wasn’t just the dress, and I don’t care about your theme, I was here to heal me.”
Dominic concluded the emotional video with a heartfelt message directed at the alleged abuser, reflecting on the journey of healing over the past year.
“He moves on now, whoever he is and whomever he is with, I hope he doesn’t break your pearls. It took me a year to fix mine.”
Dominic’s emotional explanation has shifted the conversation surrounding the controversial look, reminding many that behind every outfit can be a story that goes far beyond fashion.
