If it wasn’t horrifying enough to have witnessed, via video footage, the murder of a woman protesting ICE in the streets of Minneapolis, then just look to the responses we’re hearing from Republicans.

Over the past week, it’s been hard to reckon with the fact that half our country believes she deserves what she got, the same way that half the country believes that it’s morally and legally acceptable to slowly choke a Black man to death simply because he’d used a counterfeit $20 to buy cigarettes while appearing drunk, and afterwards refused to get into a police car upon his arrest.

You would think it would be enough to make a human being sick to see what happened to Renee Good. Instead, public figures have celebrated the narrative of the president and Secretary of Homeland Security: that Good was a radical, a rioter, a domestic terrorist who was guilty of attempted murder, triggering a collective condemnation among conservatives that happily dives into the most unhinged character assassinations of both Good and all those who lean left that I’ve ever seen.
