With four Metro FM Music Awards nominations under her belt, Nia Pearl is stepping into a powerful new chapter of her career. From deeply personal songwriting to immersive live performances, the amapiano star is embracing growth, creativity and connection in a way that continues to resonate with fans across South Africa.

In this exclusive Q&A, she opens up about the importance of performing live, the nomination that means the most to her, her musical beginnings, dream collaborations and what fans can expect next.

Why is it crucial to engage with your audience through live performances?

Live performances are about energy exchange. Streaming lets people enjoy the music, but on stage, I get to feel their emotions, see their reactions and create a shared moment that cannot be replicated. It is about building a bond that goes beyond sound — it is spirit meeting spirit.

Which of your four Metro FM Music Awards nominations excites you the most?

Every nomination is a blessing, but the Song of the Year nomination excites me the most. That category represents how deeply a track resonates with people, and knowing that my music has touched so many lives is the ultimate reward.

When did your music journey begin, and did a young Nia Pearl ever envision receiving a Metro nomination?

My journey began when I was very young, singing at family gatherings and writing little verses in my notebook. Back then, I dreamed of stages and recognition, but I could not have imagined the reality of being nominated for a Metro FM Award.

It feels surreal, yet it is also the universe affirming that I am on the right path.

How do you feel your music connects with fans across South Africa?

I believe my music connects with fans because it speaks to shared experiences. Amapiano is more than just a sound — it is a lifestyle that reflects the rhythm of our communities.

When people dance to my songs or sing along to the lyrics, they are not just enjoying the music; they are reliving moments of joy, love and resilience. My goal has always been to create music that feels personal yet universal, so that whether someone is in Soweto, Durban or Cape Town, they can find a piece of themselves in it.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your music writing style and well-curated stage performances?

My inspiration comes from everyday life, love, resilience and the rhythm of our communities. Writing is like storytelling for me; I weave emotions into melodies.

On stage, I curate performances to be immersive, blending sound, visuals and movement so the audience feels like they are part of the journey, not just watching it.

Which other artists do you hope to collaborate with this year?

I would love to collaborate with Tems, whose soulful sound has inspired me deeply. Tyla is another artist I admire — her global hit Water showed how South African talent can resonate worldwide.

Working with Yvonne Chaka Chaka would be a dream, as her timeless classics carry the spirit of our heritage. I am also drawn to Beatenberg, whose fusion of indie and African influences brings such a refreshing energy.

Each of these artists has a unique voice and style, and together we could create something timeless that blends Amapiano with their distinct sounds.

What can fans expect from you in the year ahead?

Fans can expect more boundary-pushing music, new singles, collaborations and performances that celebrate music while exploring fresh sounds.

I am also working on a project that blends live instrumentation with multiple genres, so expect something innovative and heartfelt. This year is about growth, and I want my fans to grow with me.
