Animals may have appeared on Earth as much as 200 million years before their oldest unmistakable fossils, according to a new modeling study published Oct. 2 in Science Advances. The analysis places the possible origin of animals between about 800 million and 700 million years ago, potentially before some of the most extreme ice ages in Earth's history.
