The sustainability and growth of South Africa’s pork industry depend on more than the efforts of individual producers. A strong agricultural sector also requires collective investment, effective industry coordination and systems that support research, development and long-term competitiveness. One of the mechanisms that helps achieve these objectives is the statutory levy, which provides a framework for raising funds to support initiatives that benefit an agricultural industry as a whole. For South African pork producers, understanding how the statutory levy works, why it matters and how levy funding can be accessed is essential. These issues were explored during an episode of the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (SAPPO) podcast, “Let’s Talk Pork”, featuring Mr Nyhodo, Senior Manager in the Agricultural Regulatory Measures Division (ARMD) of the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC).
