Chiefs coach backs Petersen after MTN8 exit

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz refused to blame goalkeeper Brandon Petersen after Amakhosi were knocked out of the MTN8.

Chiefs lost 1-0 to Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium on Sunday, ending their return to the competition after a two-year absence.

Petersen was caught out for the only goal in the 53rd minute.

Khulekani Shezi received the ball on the right and spotted the Chiefs captain standing well off his line.

His attempted cross flew past Petersen at the near post and into the net.

But Da Cruz said Chiefs had other chances to change the result.

“We missed a lot of chances today,” he told SuperSport TV after the game. “After that we tried to come back, but we had a lack of efficiency.”

Da Cruz said he would watch the goal again before judging what happened.

“I think the player missed his cross and we lost it,” he said. “I don’t want to say we lost because of one player.”

Chiefs must now quickly move on from their cup disappointment.

They return to Betway Premiership action against Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.
