Last Sunday, I was pressing my phone when I came across the video, the pastor stretched his hand towards the young women and shouted into the mic. “Your womb will open in Jesus’ name!” The crowd roared. People wept, oil flowed, tongues blasted in every direction. But the husband standing beside her? Nobody laid hands on him, nobody asked him anything, nobody checked him, nobody prayed for his sperm count too.
Because in many churches and mosques, infertility is framed as a female affliction: a spiritual burden attached to her body, her destiny, her sin, her supposed failure as a woman and untrue assumptions. “Maybe she was wayward before marriage, maybe she has done multiple miscarriages and blocked her womb”.
Yet medically, male factor infertility contributes to about half of all infertility cases. But in African churches especially Nigeria my country? It contributes to zero prayer points.
