Cristiano Ronaldo’s Fifa World Cup journey ended on Monday after Portugal fell 1-0 to Spain in the last 16 in Texas, closing the final chapter of his pursuit of football’s biggest prize.

The 41-year-old struggled to influence the game, despite managing three shots, as Portugal’s attack misfired.

After the final whistle, an emotional Ronaldo admitted the disappointment but said he leaves “with a clear conscience,” adding that Portugal’s Euro 2016 triumph remains “just as significant as a World Cup” to him.

Ronaldo’s best World Cup run came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals.

This tournament saw him score three times — twice against Uzbekistan and once agaisnt Croatia — but he cut a peripheral figure against Spain, at one point showing frustration as passes went astray.

Spain’s progress to the quarter finals where they will take on Belgium, who defeated co-hosts USA 4-1 in Seattle in Monday’s late game.

England’s historic 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca will see them take on Norway after France face Morocco in the other confirmed last eight clash.

Mohamed Salah’s Egypt and Lionel Messi’s Argentina will face off on Tuesday evening with the winner taking on the victor of Colombia versus Switzerland in the quarters.
