South African superstar Babes Wodumo made one Grade 12 pupil’s matric dance a night to remember after honouring a promise she made two years ago. The musician attended the 2026 matric dance as the learner’s official partner, proving that some promises are meant to be kept.
The pupil from Sithengile Senior Secondary School looked stunning in a black glittery dress, while Babes Wodumo turned heads in a bold orange dress designed by Mandeluzi Vintage Wear. Together, they made a memorable entrance that quickly captured attention.
The heartwarming moment began two years ago during an amatshitshi (maidens’) event where Babes was performing. During the event, she met the young woman and made a promise that would stay with her for years.
“2 years back [I] met a young woman at an event yamatshitshi [maidens’ event]. I made a promise: ‘Waziphatha kahle [if you carry yourself well] kwi matric dance, I’ll be your partner,’” she wrote.
True to her word, Babes showed up for the matric dance, making the special occasion even more meaningful for the learner.
Babes Wodumo also took a moment to praise the event, saying she was impressed by the beautiful outfits worn by the learners and touched by the warm welcome she received from both the students and teachers.
“Sithengile Senior Secondary School matric dance was so amazing, seeing these young women enjoying this memorable night, bebe bahle kakhulu [they were all so beautiful]. The teachers and students were welcoming,” she added.
The celebrations did not end when the dance was over. Babes surprised the matric learners by treating them to an after-party, giving them another chance to celebrate one of the biggest milestones of their school journey.
While enjoying the festivities, she also encouraged the learners to remain focused on their studies and continue working hard as they prepared for the rest of their academic year.
“Even after the matric dance, I took the students out for an after party just to treat them bayazi ke sivumelene benze sure bayaphasa [they know our agreement and they made sure to pass]. Wishing them unyaka omuhle enekusasa eliqhakazile [a fruitful year and a bright future],” she wrote.
By showing up on one of the biggest nights of the pupil’s school life and encouraging the matric class to work hard towards a bright future, the award-winning star created memories that the learners are likely to cherish for years to come.
