Why Republicans Are Going All-In On Their Anti-Somali Racism

If you’ve been paying attention to politics at all in the last few days/weeks, you will have noticed that Republicans and the right in the US have been really going hard in their attacks on Somali people. Much of this stems from Democratic Ilhan Omar, or rather, the racism that she experiences from people on the right. Republicans have been describing Somali’s in the US, and in particular the state of Minnesota as an invasion as well as making countless horrifically racist statements about Somali’s.

While it is obvious to any reasonably-minded person that the attacks on the Somali community we’re seeing from the right are motivated by racism, one thing which is surely worth noting is how deeply tragic this all is. I’m sure we can all remember just last year when the right was going all-in on their horrific anti-Haitian racism, which culminated in Donald Trump declaring that Haitian immigrants were eating people’s pets. This is a lie which was repeated by countless right-wing figures, such as noted liar Chris Rufo.
