Single Dads Deserve the Same Compassion We Give Single Moms

For some reason, society still treats single motherhood and single fatherhood very differently.
When we hear “single mom,” most people picture strength, sacrifice, and resilience.
When we hear “single dad,” the reaction often shifts — surprise, sympathy, or sometimes even suspicion.
But here’s the truth: single dads face many of the same emotional, financial, and mental battles that single moms do. They’re balancing full-time jobs, late-night homework help, empty dinner tables, and quiet weekends without their kids. Yet their struggles are often overlooked — or worse, minimized.
It’s time we talk about that.
The Double Standard Is Real
When a single mother brings her kids to school, people say, “She’s doing an amazing job.”
When a single father does the same, people say, “Wow, that’s so rare — where’s the mom?”
It’s a subtle bias, but a powerful one. Society tends to view caregiving as a woman’s natural role and sees fathers as the “backup parent.” But single dads are not backups — they’re full-time, emotionally invested, deeply caring parents doing their best under tough circumstances.
