Woke, woke, woke…
“Woke” is the word which seems so attractive to people on the right, given their constant use of it to describe anything they don’t like. People on the left will try to stump people on the right by asking them to define woke only to watch them inevitably flounder in their attempts. One such example is when Bethany Mandel failed to provide a definition of wokeness when asked, despite writing a book on the subject.
The reality here is wokeness doesn’t really mean anything to the right. The word is just a pejorative they use to describe anything they don’t like.
It’s annoying because when you look at how the word “woke” was originally used by Black Americans, it is something unobjectionable and actually, a positive thing. The original use of the term meant to be aware of societal injustice, especially surrounding racism and the mistreatment of Black Americans by institutions like the Police. In a rather strange twist of irony, Ron DeSantis was actually forced to define woke in court as a result of his desire to push the Stop Woke Act. His definition was to say it is the belief in systemic injustices and the desire to change them.
