Chiefs bounce back as SuperSport’s crisis deepens

By Michael Madyira

Kaizer Chiefs eased their Premier Soccer League woes with a 2-1 victory over SuperSport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

Christian Saile Basomboli first struck for Amakhosi on 19 minutes before Terrence Dzvukamanja rose from the bench to level up for Matsatsantsa from the penalty spot.

Mduduzi Shabalala then sealed victory for Amakhosi who arrived in Limpopo on a five-match winless streak.

It was relief for the Soweto giants who rose from position 11 back to eighth on the table.

But for Matsatsantsa, it was another difficult outing as they extended their winless run to 10 league matches and remain stuck in sixth.

Gavin Hunt’s side are yet to win a PSL match in 2024.

Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson maintained the line-up that started and lost 1-0 to Richards Bay last weekend.

That meant the benching of central midfielder Edson Castillo who has arguably been Chiefs’ best performer this season.

SuperSport were missing suspended goalkeeper Ricardo Goos and stepping in for him was Washington Arubi while forward Ghampani Lungu was out injured.

14 minutes into the match, Thulani Hlatshwayo showed his experience in stopping a charging Ashley du Preez in what was a promising Chiefs attack.

Saile then launched a rocket, pouncing on Aphiwe Baliti’s miscue of a Pule Mmodi cross to end a four-game goal drought.

The visitors tried to hit back through Keenan Bezuidenhout’s powerful shot, but the Soweto giants’ goalkeeper Bvuma was up to the task to punch it out for a corner kick.

Chiefs thought they had doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time but Given Msimango’s headed effort was ruled to have been scored from an offside position.

Not long after the restart, Dzvukamanja then sent Bvuma the wrong way from the penalty spot after Sifiso Hlanti had handled inside the box.

But Matsatsantsa’s celebrations did not last long as Chiefs reclaimed their lead after Shabalala volleyed home a Saile cutback.
