Hopes by former president Jacob Zuma that he will return to Parliament have been dashed after the Electoral Commission (IEC) ruled that he is not eligible.
Zuma was sitting at Number 1 on the parliamentary list for the MK Party (uMkhonto Wesizwe).
However, on Thursday the IEC ruled that Zuma is not eligible for the honorable house. That was after an objection was raised against his presence.
Mosotho Moepya from the IEC told a media briefing that the MK party has been informed of the decision and so has the person who raised the objection.
“In the case of former president Zuma, yes we did receive an objection which has been upheld. The party that nominated him has been informed and … the objectors have been informed,” he said.
He did not disclose who lodged the objection and on what grounds. But one of the matters that have been raised against Zuma was his June 2021 conviction for contempt of the Constitutional Court.
The MK party was hopeful that Zuma was going back to Parliament and would become the next president after the national elections.
These hopes were openly expressed on Wednesday outside the Durban High Court where the party had a mini-rally after winning its court case with the ANC over its logo.
